ACUTE's Beginnings

ACUTE Environmental & Safety Services Inc.’s story begins with visits to 18 aged sentinels of the Great Lakes.

After decades of use these grand lighthouses that guided thousands of ships safely to port were due for one final task – decommissioning. The lighthouses held within them a toxic component. A mercury bath was used as a low-friction rotation device to turn the ever-pulsing search light. Before the historic structures could be closed, those environmental concerns had to be addressed.

In 1996, ACUTE was tasked with the removal of that mercury. The team criss-crossed Ontario, handling  and packaging over two metric tonnes of the substance. With that, those old beacons set one last course, that of ACUTE.
